My computer is finally fixed at work so I feel like I'm back in the loop here. I may as well have taken last Friday off because without my computer there wasn't much I could do. Either way, M. picked me up on Friday (which is always a nice treat) because he wanted to use the car to run a few errands. That night we had planned to try out a new pizza place in town, but instead we went to a standby favorite for burgers. We ended up renting Up in the Air with George Clooney and we both thought it was pretty interesting. Other than that, Friday was a great night in -- in fact, Friday night is my favorite night to stay in and just hang out on the couch with M.
Saturday we couldn't decide what to do, but because it was so nice out we knew we needed to get out and about. We ended up driving into VA and just kind of roaming around (after sitting through 2 hours of traffic)...driving through different neighborhoods with big, beautiful houses, checking out local shopping areas, and since we were so far out we also stopped at one of our favorite Carolina style BBQ places for a late lunch.
Sunday we had a set plan. I've been wanting to visit the local market here in DC, Eastern Market to be exact, to check out the fresh produce and miscellaneous vendors. We woke up relatively early and walked over to the market. Despite it being super hot, we had a wonderful time browsing the market. The produce was absolutely beautiful and the flowers were to die for! Aside from the food, there were also some really great vendors of jewelry and home accessories. I picked up a necklace (that I've seen before) that I've been dying to have (for an AMAZING price) and will definitely be visiting that vendor again for some fun gifts for the people I love! I also spotted some beautiful tin paneled mirrors that I just loved! My favorite was this robins egg blue mirror. So cute and really well priced!
M. and I also loved looking through all of the antique knick-knacks. My was impressed with the cool key covers and I loved looking through all of the chandelier pieces. Markets like Eastern Market are the perfect place to let your DIY imagination run wild.
M. and I were going to enjoy lunch at Market Lunch, an Eastern Market institution, but it was so busy that we decided to pass. Instead we ended up at a restaurant a few streets away that served a delicious lunch menu. After enjoying our meal we made our way home and relaxed for a little bit before our weekly grocery store run.
As you all know, I made a "promise" last week to try out new recipes on Sunday evenings and despite being full from my lunch I kept that promise! Usually I will do these "On the Menu" posts on Sunday evenings, but because I didn't start cooking until pretty late last night (7:00) I decided I would incorporate it into today's post. So without further ado...
On the Menu: Light Summer Fare
Remember this post?! Well, it’s my first week keeping my “promise” of actually trying out the many recipes I have accumulated in my recipe binder and I feel like I actually did pretty well (giving myself a pat or two on the back!)!!
After a weekend of some wonderful food (going out to eat and trying new restaurants is seriously tops on my list of favorite things to do) I felt like I needed to get back into semi-healthy eating again. I know I said I was going to try and make some delicious meals for the Mr., but because of a big lunch earlier in the afternoon I just couldn't see myself making a big dinner and instead went with something relatively simple...start slow, right?! So this Sunday I whipped up a light summer fare menu which mostly only I enjoyed and M. just tried.
I was really in the mood for a delicious soup and sandwich combination, but didn’t want the heaviness of a sandwich (when I make a sandwich people, I really make a sandwich…see HERE). So instead of the sandwich I christened one of our wedding gifts, mini tart pans from Williams-Sonoma, and made Caramelized Onion, Mushroom and Parmesan Tartlets.
For my soup, I decided on Roasted Tomato, mostly because you can’t beat the wonderful tomatoes in the produce section right now.
So how did everything turn out, were the “dishes” delicious?
The soup was great -- the perfect accompaniment to a grilled cheese sandwich (which I haven't had in years!), but with the tartlet it was pretty bland. I think the soup/sandwich combo still rules.
Will I make these "dishes" again?
I'll definitely make the soup again and I'm convinced that I can make a great savory tart recipe I just need to find the right combination of flavors.
Join me next Sunday for another “On the Menu” post, believe me, you’ll want to…I’m sure I’ll make a fool of myself in the kitchen one of these days… :)
