Lunchtime Etiquette RANT

Let’s have a quick chat. Today I want to talk about manners…most specifically lunch manners. No, I’m no etiquette expert and of course I don’t always say the right thing, but I honestly have just about had it with lunchtime comments.
What are these lunchtime comments you may wonder. Well folks – for the last couple of weeks I have received numerous comments on my lunch choices. Not the kind of comments that are like, “Oh! Wow! Your lunch looks so delicious!” Instead I have been receiving the, “is that ALL you’re having for lunch today!?” comment. Yes people – this is ALL I am having for lunch today. I have received this very question/comment on my lunch choice probably 10 times and possibly more.

What I would like to know: Is my lunch REALLY that interesting to you? Do I look like I am withering away or developing an eating disorder so you feel like you must comment out of concern? Do you know that I eat pizza and french fries and sandwiches and cupcakes just like the rest of you?

So what do I eat for lunch you may ask. Well, no, I don’t bring a huge lunch to work every day simply because I’m not all that big on bringing something huge for lunch and don't like having the feeling of having an overly full stomach while still sitting at work. On a regular work day I usually bring some fruit, a granola bar and maybe a little something extra to hold me over until the end of the day.

Today’s lunch for example consists of a Yoplait Light Yogurt (Raspberry Cheesecake flavor – YUM!), a cup of raspberries and an apple. For a late afternoon snack I have a small handful of gummy bears (to satisfy my sweet tooth of course!). Obviously this meal isn’t loaded with calories or “fuel” food and to be honest I don’t really care. I’m not a big lunch eater and really never have been. In fact, I haven’t really “eaten a lunch” since high school (when my lovely mother still packed a lunch for me on most days). I’m much more of a dinner person.

As another example for you I will also dissect yesterday’s lunch which I can detail in two words – Raspberries. Grapefruit. I wasn’t hungry at all during work yesterday – some days I’m just not – so sue me! Yesterday really just sent me over the edge for some reason. I’m guessing it was probably the two comments that I received on the fact that a (VERY LARGE by the way) Grapefruit was “ALL” I was eating for lunch. Are you really just "wondering" if that's all I am eating for lunch or are you making the comment in a judgmental way?! I'd like to say that it's the first, but I'm guessing it's probably the latter.

I don’t sit around commenting on other people’s food saying things like, “WOW. Are you really going to eat ALL of that for your lunch today?!” So why must I be criticized or questioned for choosing to eat light at lunch?

Just a little rant for this lovely, snow covered ground, NYC Thursday morning. Let’s see what they say about my lunch today! ;)
