I’ve always known I would wear a veil and being that I will be getting married in a very traditional Catholic church I want to wear something that is equally traditional. Because I’ve always known I will wear a veil, when I worked at the bridal boutique I never could understand why so many girls were so opposed to them.
Obviously everyone is different and has their own unique taste and style (which I respect), but I would always encourage the brides to just try SOMETHING in their hair to make sure they didn’t want to wear a veil. I would always use the line, “when else in your life do you get to wear something like this?!,” and usually they agreed with me and tried on different styles. Some girls changed their opinions about not wearing a veil and decided to go with a simple fingertip length veil or something more elbow length, some decided on more of a “headpiece” such as a birdcage veil or a fluffy flower and some of course wanted nothing to do with any of it.
Then there were the girls who wanted it ALL; They wanted the big fluffy flower embellished with Swarovski crystals and feathers, the double layer tulle fingertip length veil with wide ribbon edge, a blusher and a tiara to “hold everything in place.” Oh, and don’t’ forget the “cake cutting” – for this they wanted an over-the-top, embellished-to-the-max birdcage veil. These girls I couldn’t really understand either, but I knew that one (1), there would be no tiara trying-on because our boutique really didn’t carry tiaras (which, to be honest, I can't stand) and two (2), we were there to make the bride happy so unless we felt that they were making a HUGE mistake with their choices we would give them what they wanted. **NOTE: Sometimes I did think they were making a HUGE mistake and sometimes I would speak up out of fear that they would look like the picture to the right. You would not BELIEVE how many girls came into the boutique wanting to use everything-under-the-sun for their "veil."
So even though M. reads my blog I don’t mind sharing what type of veil I’ve chosen for the wedding (I’m pretty sure he already knows anyway). I’ve decided to wear either a chapel length or cathedral length veil with a blusher.
It’s a funny thing because the actual “blusher” seemed to be the scariest part to most of the brides that came in to the boutique (as if wearing a blusher was some type of requirement -- people, you can wear a veil without a blusher!). Most of them would mention that they didn’t want to feel “trapped” and “unable to see” on their wedding day. This of course always made me laugh a little bit considering I find it hard to feel “trapped” under a sheer piece of ivory or white tulle/netting/silk netting, etc, and “unable to see,” well, let me say again…it’s a SHEER piece of ivory or white tulle/netting/silk netting, etc, but to each his own.
I’m excited about wearing a long simple veil – mine won’t have a ribbon edge or any CRAZY detailing, but it will have it’s own little special touches which I don’t want to reveal just yet – I’m guessing you’ll get to see my veil sometime around August when we get our pictures back…on second thought, I hope we get our wedding pictures back even before August!!!
