Brilliant Advertising: Dove Chocolate

You all know that I love Dove Chocolate! I was obsessed with the peppermint bark bites during the holiday season (and I still have a small stash I am hoarding and eating ever so slowly!) and I love their plain old milk chocolate bites. Seriously, who doesn’t love Dove Chocolate, it’s creamy and delicious and the perfect little treat…except when you end up eating an entire bag. Oops!

In my job I work with MANY different products on a day to day basis and of course the advertising of these products always peaks my interest. **Just so you know, I don’t work with Dove Chocolate products or their advertising, but because I am such a fan of their delicious chocolatey morsels I always notice their ads in magazines or on TV.**

So I was thinking the other day about advertising techniques (yes, sometimes I brainstorm dorky things like this) and Dove Chocolate has done wonders for their brand by simply including little messages on the inside of their chocolate wrappers and then highlighting these “messages” in their print and TV advertising. Messages like, “Find your passion” and “Dare to love completely” or my personal favorite “Smile at yourself in the mirror.” Sure these phrases are cute and uplifting. Perhaps they could make someone think for a minute….”hmmm…you’re right little piece of shiny foil which just encased the delicious chocolate that is going to go straight to my hips, I haven’t ever REALLY dared to love completely!!!”

Dove’s advertisements are truly brilliant. Not that men don’t eat these chocolates too, but these advertisements and “messages” are CLEARY (duh!) geared towards women and boy, do they make us feel great about eating those extra calories. Dove has actually whipped up a way for us to feel good when we are ripping into our fourth piece…or ninth…or fifteenth. I can guarantee you that I am one of their biggest fans (seriously, I LOVE Dove Chocolate), but I can guarantee you that I won’t be “smiling at myself in the mirror” when I notice I’ve gained 30 pounds. :)

I truly do salute you, Dove Chocolate, for attempting to make me feel better about going through bags and bags of your delicious product.

On of my supervisors is so kindly treating us to Thai food for lunch today and then my afternoon will be filled with running errands and attending a company event this evening! Have a wonderful Thursday!
