While my mom was visiting she raved about Mad Men and apparently the critics agree as even though I didn’t catch the Emmy’s the other night, it sounds as though Mad Men really cleaned up some awards! So this past Sunday while my mom was still in NYC, we loaded the first season of Mad Men onto M. and my instant Netflix account and now I am officially hooked. I’m only on episode five, but this show totally rocks. I absolutely love the story line and all of the different characters, but what I love most….as if you even had to ask….the fashion of course!!
January Jones certainly shines in her role and the producers have her decked out in the most beautiful clothing and accessories. It makes me wish I could be back in “that time” so that I could sport some of the beautiful dresses, jewelry and hairstyles…speaking of which, I need to google how to do some of those styles and try them out on the mop on my head!
I realize that only being on episode five means that I haven’t been fully exposed to all of the wonderful outfits, but I am always super excited to see what January appears in and can only imagine what is to come!
The good news for me? The retro look is totally in these days…and heck, even if it weren’t in right now, I live in New York City where you can wear anything you want and no one will look at you funny…believe me, I’ve seen some VERRRRYYYYY interesting outfitted people walking through the city.
So even though I’m not living in the time of Don Draper where smoking cigarettes every moment of every day (even in the doctors office) is acceptable (not that I'd smoke anyway), I can add to my already preppy/retro clothing collection with some beautiful pieces by Kate Spade, Milly and even Trina Turk. What preppy girl would say no to that? Plus, it seems the key to dressing in January Jones' style on the show is dresses, dresses and more beautiful dresses!
Here are a few that I am loving right now....
First up, the sheer neckline on this Kate Spade dress, the Checked Julia Dress makes me positively swoon! I think the illusion neckline offers a more modern approach to this classic silhouette and I love the hot pink and black combo featured in the fabric. Totally Draper approved.
If the illusion neckline is not your cup of tea, how about this perfectly preppy ponte knit dress with it's sweet bow from Trina Turk? I'm loving the bright melon color, which offers a nod to a popular 1960's color, but if you're concerned the melon may be a bit too bright, the black option will always be in style.
Finally, every 1960's gal needs the perfect little black cocktail dress and I think this version from Milly (the Adrienne Lace Dress) is sophisticated AND sweet. Not to mention I am loving the pairing of the retro sunglasses and the little black gloves that the model is sporting.
Accent your new dress with a chunky strand of pearls and some pearl studs, or pin a pretty brooch to the the neckline of your new dress and you're set to go in the "Mad" Style.
Are you totally obsessed with Mad Men too?! Who is your favorite character on the show?
