The Keys to Survival: A Weekend with Hurricane Irene

Well folks, turns out there really wasn’t much to be worried about in terms of hurricane Irene overtaking New York City and rendering us completely helpless – BUT better safe than sorry of course. People all over the news are complaining that all that was done to prepare for this storm was unnecessary and that it was an "inconvenience" to have to leave for the weekend, but come on people...what if it HAD been really bad? I just have to turn the news off.

M. and I decided to stay in our apartment rather than evacuate. Actually, we felt pretty OK with this decision considering we weren’t in the mandatory evacuation zone anyway. The head of my department at work let us all leave early on Friday since there was so much talk over how bad the storm was going to be and it didn’t seem as if anyone was really getting any work done. This of course was great news for me and I took advantage of the semi-cool weather to take Thatcher on a walk before M.
arrived home from work.
So let’s go over the list of things I did this weekend while cooped up in the apartment.

- First up was “essentials” shopping. Goodness, you never really realize just how FEW healthy foods there are in the grocery store that will “keep” if the power were to go out. It was almost sick what we picked up at the store, but since the news convinced us we were going to
be without power for potentially days, it was necessary.

- Once we were holed up in the apartment with a huge case of bottled water and all of our junk food, we spent the afternoon catching up on TV and surfing the internet since we wanted to get it all in
before “the power went out.”

- M. has been asking me to make him a cake for a while now and I finally got around to it this past weekend. Fudgy chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream frosting and chocolate chips…again, adding to the junk we had around the apartment.

- We watched the movie “You Again” with Kirsten Bell on Netflix. Well, really I forced M. to watch the movie “You Again”. It was overall pretty ridiculous, but a good time passer and I even heard M. chuckle a few times. ☺

- I gave myself a new, trendy manicure. Mint green with my ring
fingers painted gold and dusted with gold glitter. Not sure why, but I feel a little like Lady GaGa. Kind of obsessed with this fun combo and I can’t
wait to try this out in a pink version.

- Took a long shower and made sure to turn up the tunes to do a little singing…and no, I’m not a good singer whatsoever. That’s what showers are for….all of the terrible singers immediately transform into amazing ones.

- When we woke up on Sunday morning and took a look outside, we were surprised that nothing hadreally happened. I didn’t wake up once
Saturday night….no loud wind, no pelting rain. We decided to take a long walk. It was really windy out so we left little Thatcher at home. Look at this really cool wall we came across on our walk! I loved all of the colors and since the streets were SO EMPTY M. could get a great shot of me with it!

So that’s our weekend in a nutshell. We survived an earthquake and a hurricane all in one week. I think I can do without weather disasters for a while….

Happy Monday!
