I'm sure you all know by now that there was an earthquake in Virginia about an hour and half ago. Turns out that earthquake made waves all over the East Coast including here in New York City.
Let's review how this all went down...
I work on the 10th floor of my building. All of a sudden, the floor starts to shake a bit. I assume I am just a little dizzy and dehydrated and ignore it for a minute. Then my coworker suddenly looks over and says, "Did you just feel that?" Two seconds later every single person in my 10th floor office (which is about 300 people) are standing behind their desks, grabbing their purses, etc. and booking it towards the stairs. There was no hesitation whatsoever. To say that I was freaked out was an understatement.
Next thing on the list was to find out if the husband was OK. Since at the time we were all running down the stairs in our building and had no idea that it was actually an earthquake I was thinking the absolute worst. Suddenly I saw I had a text from M. that said, "Our building is being evacuated," and a couple seconds later I got a hold of him on the phone and heard him say. "We're all running down the stairs, it was really bad here". Again, living in New York City means that your mind doesn't first lean towards "oh, this is probably just an earthquake". At this point I am more freaked out than before.
When I reached the outside of our building and started walking towards a somewhat "clear" area with fewer buildings towering over us, I called my mom to tell her what was happening. It was after that short conversation that the phones started not really working and I couldn't get a hold of M. again.
Now I am back in my work building and have accounted for my husband and my mom and sister who are currently on their way to DC. Whew. What a scary afternoon. I'm glad it wasn't something even worse, but it was seriously a SCARY experience. I remember a conversation I had with some New Yorkers after first moving here about what it was like on September 11th and if they still think about it and worry about it. At the time those people told me that they "never worry about something happening," but after an experience like that, I don't know how that's not the first thought that crosses a person's mind.
From all of the news reports so far it seems that things are OK in everywhere the quake was felt, but it just reminds me that you always have to be on high alert.
There is a first thing for everything I guess...and today, I experienced my very first earthquake! Hope my little puppy is OK too!
