A couple of months ago I came across a photo on the internet (sorry, I did not note the source for the photo) that I absolutely loved. It is what looks to be an entryway wall and I was in awe of the gorgeous black and white pattern, of course, the hot pink flowers certainly make it even more amazing!
So since I have been in “re-decorate” mode for our apartment (which we plan on staying in for another year) I have been trying to think of cost effective ways to spruce up our space without doing anything too drastic. I’m not really interested in painting the walls of our apartment because I know it will be a hassle to change before we do eventually move places, so that was of course another challenge.
Finally, I’ve been going back and forth about the style of our apartment…and, while I would love to have a shabby-chic, Restoration Hardware meets Pottery Barn oasis, our apartment has more modern lines and hey, we are in New York, so I may as well have something kind of different while I can, right?! So it's going to have to be a preppy meets modern apartment design...hmmm..challenging.
After rediscovering this black and white inspiration photo on my computer a couple of weeks ago, I decided that I would recreate this “entryway” in my own entry hallway, but instead of wallpaper or paint I was going to use black masking tape. Yep – tape. Want to see the finished product?! Read on...
Well first I started this project by making a simple pattern out of cardboard. If you want to try a project similar to this, it’s certainly not overly difficult to make any pattern you’d like, as long as it has straight lines and crisp edges you are clear to go! So at first I thought I w
I placed an online order from Amazon for the tape since I couldn’t seem to find black masking tape anywhere in New York City (granted, I only went to one place looking, so
I started the hallway with just two simple shapes and from there I built around them. We have an old black bookshelf in our hallway (which I will hopefully create some sort of “skirt” for) so I knew exactly where I needed the pattern to go to…yes, I cheated and didn’t do the ENTIRE wall since I don’t plan on buying a new piece to replace that bookshelf any time s
Here are some of the “during” photos that I took…and yes, if you look closely on that bookshelf that would be a carrot cake cupcake on the edge of the bookshelf. Hey, all you need to get you through a big DIY project is a great cupcake
This project took me a total of three evenings and I probably could have even cut that time down when I finally got the hang of placing the template and penciling in the corner points. Alright….so are you ready for the big reveal?! HERE IT IS! Our
So what do you think?! AMAZING impact and improvement I would say!!
Before (I forgot to take a photo of our hallway) it was just a boring entryway into a New York City apartment and NOW
So the patterns aren’t perfect…I definitely made a few miscalculations as far as dist
PS: I decided to only do the one wall because I am planning on a great black and white photo gallery arrangement on the opposite wall! I will definitely post it when it's completed! :)
