A couple of months ago I came across a photo on the internet (sorry, I did not note the source for the photo) that I absolutely loved. It is what looks to be an entryway wall and I was in awe of the gorgeous black and white pattern, of course, the hot pink flowers certainly make it even more amazing!
So since I have been in “re-decorate” mode for our apartment (which we plan on staying in for another year) I have been trying to think of cost effective ways to spruce up our space without doing anything too drastic. I’m not really interested in painting the walls of our apartment because I know it will be a hassle to change before we do eventually move places, so that was of course another challenge.
Finally, I’ve been going back and forth about the style of our apartment…and, while I would love to have a shabby-chic, Restoration Hardware meets Pottery Barn oasis, our apartment has more modern lines and hey, we are in New York, so I may as well have something kind of different while I can, right?! So it's going to have to be a preppy meets modern apartment design...hmmm..challenging.
After rediscovering this black and white inspiration photo on my computer a couple of weeks ago, I decided that I would recreate this “entryway” in my own entry hallway, but instead of wallpaper or paint I was going to use black masking tape. Yep – tape. Want to see the finished product?! Read on...
Well first I started this project by making a simple pattern out of cardboard. If you want to try a project similar to this, it’s certainly not overly difficult to make any pattern you’d like, as long as it has straight lines and crisp edges you are clear to go! So at first I thought I would make a full pattern of the shape, but turns out I was going to need “half” patterns for the corner of the entryway by our front door so I ended up just making one half and using that throughout the project. Did it mean a little more time was involved…yes, but it made those corners oh-so-easy!
I placed an online order from Amazon for the tape since I couldn’t seem to find black masking tape anywhere in New York City (granted, I only went to one place looking, so that could have been the reason). The total cost for two rolls of black masking tape was $15.00 and I only used one full roll and a quarter of the second. That means that with a little hard work and the black tape…this entire wall cost me only $15! So much cheaper than those wall decals you can buy and it gives SUCH an amazing impact.
I started the hallway with just two simple shapes and from there I built around them. We have an old black bookshelf in our hallway (which I will hopefully create some sort of “skirt” for) so I knew exactly where I needed the pattern to go to…yes, I cheated and didn’t do the ENTIRE wall since I don’t plan on buying a new piece to replace that bookshelf any time soon and part of the wall will simply not show.
Here are some of the “during” photos that I took…and yes, if you look closely on that bookshelf that would be a carrot cake cupcake on the edge of the bookshelf. Hey, all you need to get you through a big DIY project is a great cupcake and a little patience! At one point during the process I moved the bookshelf back into place and replaced the painting that originally sat atop the shelf so I could see how my lines were looking. So far so good…
This project took me a total of three evenings and I probably could have even cut that time down when I finally got the hang of placing the template and penciling in the corner points. Alright….so are you ready for the big reveal?! HERE IT IS! Our brand new apartment entryway!
So what do you think?! AMAZING impact and improvement I would say!!
Before (I forgot to take a photo of our hallway) it was just a boring entryway into a New York City apartment and NOW it’s the first thing you see when you walk in (and you’d never know it was tape!) and I feel like it makes you wonder what the rest of the place looks like…which, truthfully, the rest of the place isn’t finished, BUT how awesome is our new hallway!?
So the patterns aren’t perfect…I definitely made a few miscalculations as far as distances, etc. BUT I think that because it has such an impact you don’t really notice the imperfections and to be honest, I don’t mind one bit. And of course I had to try and recreate the look of the original inspiration photo! I replaced the painting that has always leaned on that shelf (it’s actually an oil painting I did circa 7th grade), added a cute photo of the hubs and me, a “key” plate (shaped like a big flower), a little Pottery Barn touch (with my monogrammed silver clock) and then the show stealer…these GORGEOUS hot pink roses. If you can’t tell I am absolutely FLOORED over how different this has made our apartment look and I can’t wait for more fun home projects! :)
PS: I decided to only do the one wall because I am planning on a great black and white photo gallery arrangement on the opposite wall! I will definitely post it when it's completed! :)
